American Cruise Lines is proud to announce the newest addition to the expanding fleet of small cruise ships, the American Constitution. Designed with elegance in mind, this brand new coastal cruise ship carries a capacity of just 175 guests and is uniquely designed to navigate the inland coastal waterways of the East Coast. In the intimate atmosphere on board, guests will find the largest staterooms in the industry, spacious lounges, as well as observation decks and private balconies that offer spectacular views of the passing landscapes.
Day 1 | Providence, Rhode Island: The state capital of Rhode Island is known as the "Renaissance City," with a host of attractions for visitors to enjoy including acclaimed theaters, fine arts, and Philharmonic performances. Over three centuries of fascinating history are preserved in Providence, from Street's "Mile of History" to the immaculate examples of Colonial and Victorian architecture.
Day 2 | New Bedford, Massachusetts: In the mid-19th-century, New Bedford was the whaling capital of the world and became the inspiration behind Herman Melville's classic American novel, Moby Dick, published in 1841.
Today, New Bedford is still known as "The Whaling City," with an authentic seaport village, large fishing fleet, and working waterfront.
In this famous whaling city, the New Bedford Whaling Museum is the largest of its kind, devoted to the history of North American whaling. Your journey begins with a narrated walk led by a park ranger or a trolley ride to the Visitors Center. Enjoy a short introductory film in the theater and time to explore, before taking a short walk across the street to visit the Whaling Museum. As you explore the exhibits, gain an understanding of the industry that shaped the town of New Bedford.
After a hearty New England-inspired breakfast, the Acushnet harbor cruise captain will greet you at the ship and take you on relaxing cruise around the historic New Bedford / Fairhaven harbor. Explore the popular Palmer's Island Lighthouse, a working fishing fleet, and Fort Phoenix, which dates back to the Revolutionary War. Your captain will also share insights into the local fishing industry and their focus on scallops. After you arrive back on the ship, enjoy a seafood dinner made from the locally sourced scallops and fish.
Once the whaling capital of the world, New Bedford is the nation's most valuable fishing port. Get an overview of the fishing industry and other aspects of town's working waterfront. Beginning at the State Pier, learn about this multi-use pier which combines industrial use and tourism providing berths for cargo ships, cruise ships, tall ships, and offering ferry service to Cuttyhunk, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. Stop at the Fisherman's Monument which is dedicated to fishing families and provides a focal point to talk about the lifestyle and dangers of commercial fishing. Explore Fisherman's Wharf, an active fishing pier, and the Wharfinger Building, where you can learn about fishing vessels, shore side businesses, and the history of the seafood auction. Conclude the excursion at the Fishing Heritage Center, a brand new museum located in the City's historic district, featuring the exhibit "From Boat to Table."
Day 3 | Nantucket Island, Massachusetts: Be transported back to the 18th century as you step off your ship onto the timeworn cobblestone streets of Nantucket. Discover how this delightful island evolved from a small farming community to become the center of the American whaling industry and later a popular resort community. Nantucket is a world unto itself, with towering church steeples and old-world architecture.
As you approach the tranquil shores of Nantucket, the captain will set anchor in the calm sound for a breathtaking view of Nantucket. In the morning, you will tender into shore where you will be greeted by a native Nantucket guide who will serve as your island escort. Your engaging guide will share stories of the island's early history, the popular rose-covered cottage style homes, and intriguing art community. Explore the cranberry bogs and local lighthouses before spending free time in the popular downtown to shop or dine at your leisure.
Day 4 | Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts:
Martha's Vineyard was once a hub for whaling fleets and merchant ships, with exotic cargo from the far corners of the world arriving on her shores. Today, the island is one of the most popular vacation spots in New England, comprised of six distinct towns, including Chilmark and Vineyard Haven. The most genteel town on the island is historic Edgartown, prim and proper with its freshly painted Colonial homes and manicured gardens.
Enjoy a narrated excursion of the island, including historic Edgartown which maintains its Greek Revival architecture, Oak Bluffs with its quaint gingerbread cottages, the scenic harbor of Vineyard Haven, and West Tisbury reminiscent of a Currier & Ives print. Stroll through the quaint village of Edgartown where you will have time to shop and explore.
Day 5 | Block Island, Rhode Island: Stroll along Mohegan Bluffs and admire the Southeast Lighthouse, located along the southern shore of the island. The bluffs rise 200 feet above the ocean and stretch three miles along the shoreline. This small island off the coast of Rhode Island has become a popular summertime destination, adored for its easy-going attitude, splendid nature trails, and breathtaking views.
As you ride along the scenic Mohegan Bluffs gazing upon the colorful sails which illuminate its harbors, it will come as no surprise why this area serves as inspiration for many artists. Known simply on the island as "Howie," your private guide for the day is nothing short of a local legend. Along with Howie, you will visit all the main attractions of the island, while also showing you its treasured nooks of which only the most experienced locals are aware. As your excursion winds along the scenic bluffs on the way to Old Harbor, stop at the famous Southeast Lighthouse before having time to peruse the quaint boutiques of the harbor. While in Old Harbor, sip on a glass of refreshing Del's Lemonade, a local Rhode Island summer treat for over 70 years.
Day 6 | Newport, Rhode Island: Nestled within Narragansett Bay is Newport, the yachting capital of the world. As you stroll along the beautiful beaches, historic neighborhoods, bustling wharves, and scenic waterfront, you will find Newport offers something for everyone. Visit the Herreshoff Marine Museum and America's Cup Hall of Fame. Explore Newport's fabled past with glimpses of opulent seaside estates along the "Avenue of the Mansions."
Newport boasts one of the finest natural harbors in the world. The night before your arrival, engage in an enlightening lecture of how Newport's earliest settlers protected the harbor from intruders and also used it to achieve monetary successes. The intimate size of the ship allows you to dock right at Fort Adams, the well-known fort used to protect the harbor, and puts you just a short ride away from Newport's bustling riverfront. The onboard lecturer will walk you over to the fort and answer any questions you may have before leading you to a knowledgeable park ranger who will delve deeper into the history of the fort and the military and naval strategies implemented there.
Travel back in time to the epicenter of 19th-century opulence as a knowledgeable guide takes you down one of the most architecturally impressive avenues in the world. Learn about the owners of the homes and their monetary successes as you travel along the spectacular Ocean View Drive and Bellevue Avenue, stopping at the "grande dame" of them all, The Breakers Mansion. A portrayal of the social and financial prominence of the Vanderbilt family at the turn of the century, the architecture of this 70 guestroom Italian Renaissance-style palazzo is remarkable. Take a leisurely audio journey of the home and learn about the Vanderbilt family and the inspiration for their building this impressive summer "cottage." At the conclusion of the visit, you will have time to explore the bustling Newport waterfront at your leisure.
Day 7 | Bristol, Rhode Island: Visit Battleship Cove, a unique "floating" museum recognized as the world's largest collection of 20th-centuryUnited States naval fighting ships. Relive childhood memories on the magnificent, fully-restored carousel at Battleship Cove, the oldest functioning carousel in America. Explore the collection of intricate model ships and other nautical keepsakes at Fall River's Marine Museum.
As the ship pulls into port, the Herreshoff Marine Museum can be seen from the comfort of your private balcony. A guide will greet you at the ship and walk with you across the street to the museum which features some of the finest yachts built during "The Golden Age of Yachting." The museum also features the America's Cup Hall of Fame, which honors those who have competed in the most renowned international yachting event in the world.
Blithewold is a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay. This mansion has historical significance as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place era and for its value in representing the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.
