At the heart of Rome’s historic core, the Regola district was shaped by the great stars of the Renaissance. Step outside the city-center hotel and you’re witness to its connections to 16th-century Rome. The vast travertine slabs lining its facade are known locally as the ‘sofas of Via Giulia’ and are all that remains of a vast courthouse designed by Renaissance grandee Donato Bramante.
Today Regola and Via Giulia still hum with creativity. Explore the ancient district’s meandering cobbled alleys and sun-washed piazzas to chance upon the workshops of antiques restorers and mosaic-makers, goldsmiths and leather workers. You’ll find masterpieces by Raphael and Caravaggio tucked away in baroque churches, and discover eye-catching work by emerging artists exhibited in contemporary galleries.
